Dry storage and post-harvest handling

Reduce avoidable losses with suitable drying, handling and storage. Start with the crop, expected throughput and quality required by buyers. Compare small improvements or storage services with building a new facility, and include operating costs in the financing discussion.

Who and what the project needs

Growers, aggregators and accountable storage-service cooperatives. Drying surfaces or equipment; hermetic storage where suitable; moisture checks; pallets; handling and pest management.

How repayment or affordability should be tested

Use verified storage/handling fees or conservative reductions in losses. Price speculation alone is not a reliable repayment source.

Critical risks

Poor moisture control can damage an entire stock. Ownership disputes, weak inventory records and buyer rejection can overwhelm the value of a building.

What to prepare

Quality protocol; site rights; throughput evidence; stock ownership rules; insurance and operator arrangements.

What to measure

Loss rate, accepted grades, utilisation and net service income.
